Well Equipped
As president and CEO of Home Video Studio, I have many tasks. I must wear many hats. I like these hats and don’t mind switching from one hat to another, or just piling them all on at once if need be. For a good deal of last week at NAB, I was wearing my "new equipment hat". If you like video gear, cameras, lighting, computers, software, etc., then you would like NAB 2008, the annual convention for anyone and everyone with an interest in video. If you were at the show last week, you saw a lot of cool stuff, acres of video equipment. What was not to like?
Most of us drool over anything tech. Most of us, meaning almost anyone reading this blog, nearly everyone who was at NAB, and those of you who want to start your own video business, or expand the one you have. I include myself in the drooling category with one noted exception. I can turn the drooling on and off. I can and do take the emotion out of the high-tech, super-cool new computer and video equipment. It’s not the equipment. It’s what we teach you to do with the equipment.
I can go out today, with a ten-year-old camcorder, store-bought software and a little drive and determination and make tons of money with video. You see it is not the equipment that makes the difference. It is what you do with it. And that is not to say that means how great you are or how creative you are. Creative people and creative video people are a dime a dozen (have I used that clichÈ yet?). What HVS teaches is making money with video. To do that it helps to have the best darn equipment package in the industry and that is one of the things we offer. It’s also why our packages start at $100,000.00 plus. It takes just a bit of gear to start up a Home Video Studio! Well equipped? Yes. Well equipped to make a business out of video. Absolutely!

Creating Content

Dateline: LAS VEGAS, NV, Sunday, April 13, 8:00 p.m. Las Vegas, NV. NAB and FMC Content Creators Party.

Flashback ninety days or so - I was making our NAB reservations and saw the following on the NAB registration form: Come relax Sunday night and enjoy great food, cocktails and entertainment at the hottest and most exclusive location on the Vegas Strip - the PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace. This private function is a great opportunity to meet and network with industry professionals and peers including the Post|Production World Conference speakers. Since I am both a content creator and a content modifier, I registered for the event at a whopping $85.00 per ticket (it takes money to make money).

Denise and I presented ourselves promptly at 7:45 p.m. and then cooled our heels for the next fifteen minutes (at least she did, I was not wearing heels!). We are both well-heeled though, so when the doors opened, we walked in with the rest of the crowd and began to mingle. PURE is a stunning nightclub. The outdoor patio has a beautiful view of the Las Vegas strip. I imagine on a regular evening, PURE would be absolutely packed. It was nice to be there in a less crowded environment. The usual suspects were at this event. I can't say I saw a familiar face, but I did meet some new people and made some good connections, so that was a good thing. I met Michael Horton of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro Users Group (LAFCPUG) and some U.S. ARMY video specialists from Ft. Bragg. One of them had an uncanny resemblance to Russell Crowe. The crowd was very diversified! I would say that almost everyone there was a creator of content - a video producer or a video production company in some manner or fashion.

Back to making money with video. That's what we do at Home Video Studio. We make money by both creating content and by modifying and duplicating content.

It's interesting for me to point out here that Home Video Studio is not a video production company. We are a video post-production company that does video production. Translation: We are both creators and modifiers of content. And there is more content being created now than at any other time in the short history of film and video. This is so important. What a great time to quit your current job and pursue your dream!

Look, there are tons of video production companies and video producers are a dime a dozen. That may lead you to think that there is a lot of competition or that the video business is over saturated. Not true. One of the most frequent questions I get is the "competition" question. We love competition! Competition is good. It makes any business stronger (if that business acts instead of reacts to their competition). Lesson one: Home Video Studio is not a video production company. We are a video post-production company that does video production. This allows us to pick and choose the videos we produce and frees us up to do outstanding and profitable post-production. We are both creators and modifiers of content.

And mining that content is PURE GOLD.

A Short-Cut

Well, the cab line was unbearably long at Mccarran Airport. But none to worry. Denise and I just got a skycap and had him help us with our luggage. Here's a shortcut hint for you. When you are traveling (and this works at most airports in most cities) get a skycap to help with your luggage; even if you only have one or two bags. For a two to six dollar tip, they will help you with your bags and then take you to the head of the taxi check-in line. That is why we never wait for a cab or wait to check in when arriving at an airport. Usually, we tip at least a dollar a bag. Why stand in line for fifteen minutes or more for a cab when you can get one NOW? Why spend fifteen years or more trying to establish a video business when you can have your own video production company now?

That's what Home Video Studio is: a shortcut. We are a shortcut to success in the video business. We will show you the path. Then you can make this business your own. That's the beauty of it.

We'll put together your website, give you marketing materials, training and of course, install your studio. This leaves you time to just plain run the business. You can also customize your Home Video Studio to be whatever you want. What will you specialize in?

One more thing. We're also big on personal responsibility. If you buy a Home Video Studio franchise, it is up to you to make it a success. We will work as hard as you do. Ultimately, success or failure lies in your hands. This is as it should be.

Welcome to my blog: Making Money with Video A Home Business.

I will use this blog to discuss many topics. The most central or imperative topic, of course, will be making money with video, but I will touch on many areas: video production and editing, making a transition from what you are doing to what you want to do and, of course, raising the money to start your business, whether it is Home Video Studio or some other venture. So, if you have an interest in leaving your current career and owning your own business, stay tuned. We are going to have a great time! It will be a great ride, I promise you that.

This entry will be short and sweet. You see, at this moment I am sitting in a nursing home in Kirksville, Missouri. My father, Harold Hanley, had a stroke this week and now lies in a bed several feet from where I sit. Dad is 91 and has had a great life. Ironically, Dad always told me that when he went he wanted to go quickly. So, I hate to see him in this state. I mention my Dad in this opening entry for several reasons  one thing for sure, it was my Dad that taught me about making money. He told me many times in my life that I could do whatever I wanted to do. I might fail or succeed, but at least I would have tried. Dad told me this both with words and by example.

More about Dad, life and of course, video. But for now, just one thought comes to mind: Just Do It. That is Nike's motto and it has been one of the themes of my life for and well, forever. Sometimes, if you think about something too long, it just complicates things. So, I usually just do stuff now instead of later (unless it is doing the dishes!).
I am writing this blog entry NOW and not LATER. Live in the NOW. Whatever it is that you need to do today, just do it. Make it happen! Dont wait for later. Later may never come and if you do the now, NOW, hopefully you will enjoy the LATER, later.
This first entry is in honor of my father, Harold G. Hanley and not the late Harold G. Hanley, mind you, that will come later, as it will for all of us. But just in honor of my father and a man who did much for many, and was and is just Dad to me.

And now, see you later. Of course, later will be your NOW!

May the Force be with you...
